Relating to your post, "The term Armageddon is sometimes applied to a possible future global war, one that could virtually wipe out civilization"

WHERE: To add a few details, it is epi-centered in Israel, specifically the Valley of Megiddo, Hebrew equivalent of “Ar-mageddon”. Revelation 16:16

WHEN: So when does this battle take place? Well, among other things the Euphrates River must first dry up allowing huge armies from countries east of Israel to easily pass their ground troops and military equipment over.

A recent article in the New York Times, reports that the Euphrates, in the birth of civilization, is drying up. Some officials worry that it could soon be half of what it is now.

As we know, the Book of Revelation prophesied the Euphrates river drying up as a sign of the End Times.
The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up to prepare the way for the kings from the East. Revelation 16:12

“Next winter will be the final chance,” said Hashem Hilead Shehi, a 73-year-old farmer who lives in a bone-dry village west of the marshes. “If we are not able to plant, then all of the families will leave.”
